“She’s the Sunshine in the Room”

So there are moments as a dad, when I’m so glad I did Landmark Education.  First of all, In the midst of all the circumstances of my life that can take away my joy, my power, and my commitments, one of my most important commitments is to McKenna.

While I try to create the best circumstances for her, as in where she lives, how she lives, and what she has available to live a life full of joy, freedom and full self-expression, I’m also committed to having impactful conversations with her, where she gets present to the beauty, the joy and the love that is in her life right now.
McKenna’s longest, closest friend had a great opportunity arise this Summer, where she was able to attend a semester in her second country of citizenship, Sweden, where she has been since early Summer.  So they haven’t seen each othersince the end of last school session, at the end of May, 2023.
So on our brief, five minute ride to school today, I asked McKenna if she missed her good friend.  She said a quick “Yes.” I wanted her to articulate a little more, and get present to what she loved about her friend of over nine years (of twelve). “So what do you miss about her?”
“Well……..She’s always the…..loudest person in the room.”  I laughed, knowing her friend, and knowing that this wasn’t exactly what McKenna wanted to say.  “I know that’s not what you really mean.  But think about what you are trying to say.”We talked and I helped her uncover what she really meant.
Then she hit on what she meant.  “She’s the sunshine in the room, wherever she goes.”
“There you go.  That’s what I thought you meant.”
